In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The late summer revolt was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Government Consultations Taking Place
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
