The Year 2026 Declared the Year of the Frog Game.
While I found the recent indie games event was a delight to watch, my biggest takeaway was not the intended one: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these hoppy characters. Considering a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are taking over the industry.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Amphibians have been far from new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. However, their prevalence has noticeably surged in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an staggering number of results. While, some of these are low-budget titles, a sizable number are serious titles centered on frogs.
Tracking the Tadpole Trend
To grasp this phenomenon, I undertook a deep dive into the recent history of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, focusing on games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The results paint a clear picture: a consistent increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The creature's growing prominence in the public consciousness is somewhat visible elsewhere, for example the popularity of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. But, the explosion in gaming appears especially powerful.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
Honestly, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess built-in design advantages for game developers.
- Weird Little Guys: They are perfectly suited to be designed as endearing characters that frequently end up as a standout feature in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their elastic legs and grappling abilities facilitate a wide array of creative gameplay ideas.
A number of the announced projects smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
The Leap Into 2026
So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the possibility for more—the stage is set for it to be the biggest year for amphibian gaming.
When these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we might just be witnessing a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
