Uche Ignites Dominant Palace Win at Shelbourne.
Even though embarking on their first-ever European campaign, Oliver Glasner's side are adapting at a rapid pace. Without star players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a commanding win that virtually secures them a place in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further victory in their upcoming match against Finnish KuPS should be enough to secure direct passage to the last 16, especially after a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Moment
This match offered a chance for several Palace's lesser-used talent to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning after joining on loan from Getafe, notched the account with a clinical goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a another, finding the net for the second consecutive succession.
A Shelbourne team that had concluded their league season proved outmatched even for a largely second-string Palace outfit. The visitors were already depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg injuries.
Control Asserted from the Start
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly took control. A flowing move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close soon after, fizzing a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the referee dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal man did not have wait long to get his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's shot had struck the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for a couple of robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Wraps Up the Game
The match was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw several individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring his very first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
The youngster was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then missed a glaring chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise positive evening for the visiting side.
